Our Physician

Peter L. Stevenson, M.D.

Dr. Stevenson was born in Detroit and raised in Dearborn, Michigan. He lives and practices in his hometown.

Prior to medical school, Dr. Stevenson received his Bachelor's of Arts degree in Chemistry from Kalamazoo College. He says, "The experiences I had at 'K' made me the unique, well rounded person I am today."

The 'Kalamazoo Plan' is more than course work. Though Dr. Stevenson had set his sights on becoming a physician before high school, it was during his sophomore year of college that he got his first taste of medicine: as part of his education, he worked in the morgue for an entire term.

Dr. Stevenson spent his junior year abroad at the Fredrich Alexander Universitat in Erlangen, Germany. Living with a German family and studying at the university in German completely immersed him in the culture, "The lessons I learned and the experiences I gained cannot be obtained any other way." During his senior year, Dr. Stevenson completed original human genetics research at the Eleanor Roosevelt Institute for Cancer Research in Denver, Colorado under the tutelage of Dr. Charles Waldren in Dr. Theodore Puck's research group. (Dr. Puck's group discovered the gene for insulin on chromosome 11 while Dr. Stevenson was a research assistant in the lab.)

Upon completion of his undergraduate degree, Dr. Stevenson studied medicine at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan. He was awarded many honors in medical school, including being chosen 'prosector' for gross anatomy, receiving clinical honors in Internal Medicine, Neurology and Psychiatry and serving as student leader for General Surgery.

He completed his residency in Obstetrics & Gynecology at Oakwood Hospital. During his residency, he was the designated medical student preceptor, as well as acting as a nurse-physician liason. He designed the orientation packet for students and incoming interns and redesigned the Labor & Delivery Admission form. Most notably, Dr. Stevenson was recognized for his achievement and professionalism by being selected the Chief Resident during his final year of training.

Since completing residency Dr. Stevenson has been actively teaching the next generation of practitioners. He holds an appointment to the faculty of the Wayne State University School of Medicine where he is Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology. He teaches medical students, residents and also teaches in the College of Allied Health lecturing and precepting Physician Assistant students. He has been twice recognized as the Clinical Preceptor of the Year. He is a frequently requested, guest lecturer and has given Grand Rounds all over the United States.

Dr. Stevenson has been teaching colleagues surgical technique throughout his career including novel laparoscopy procedures, laser techniques, minimally invasive bladder suspension and use of the DaVinci Surgical System for minimally invasive hysterectomy, myomectomy and vaginal vault suspension.

Dr. Stevenson has been active in the peer review process both as Chair of the hospital Quality Review committee and for Blue Cross for the state of Michigan.

Outside of his practice, he has been an air ambulance physician, flying fixed wing medical evacuations all over the world. Dr. Stevenson is a Certified Tactical Medical Director, has been involved in Tactical EMS support for law enforcement, and has published in the area of TEMS also.
